With the recent blackout throughout much of San Diego County, everyone has had a chance to reflect on how prepared they are for a disaster. People learned that it’s still important to have an AM/FM radio available. Anyone with a generator was glad they had one. And many people with cell phones appreciated their carrier’s efforts to keep cell service uninterrupted.
One way to stay connected with the latest news was through Twitter. San Diego Gas and Electric has it’s own twitter account and posted live updates throughout the crisis to keep customers informed. The tweets were remarkably prompt, accurate, and honest. For most of us, our only method of communication was our cell phone. And that’s why Twitter was a perfect medium to stay on top of the news.

St. Stephen Lutheran also uses Twitter to communicate updates promptly to the people it serves. When we got news that all schools in San Diego County were closing for Friday, September 9, we decided it would be best to cancel school at St. Stephen Lutheran as well. SDG&E was reporting that power would likely not be restored until the afternoon of the ninth. Canceling school was the right decision.
And so we posted an update to our Twitter account at about 9:00 PM on Thursday night, only moments after the decision had been made. Anyone who followed us on Twitter got news of the closing almost instantly. This was a far more effective method than email, phone chains, or even individual text messages.
